With World Mental Health Day taking place today (10 October), Jung Shim looks at what is mental wellbeing and what we can do to manage our mental wellbeing.
Quite simply, mental wellbeing describes your mental state. It can be mistaken for happiness but where happiness can come and go in a moment, wellbeing is the state of being comfortable, healthy or happy.
What is good mental wellbeing?
Good mental wellbeing is when you are the following;
feel relatively confident in yourself and have positive self-esteem
feel and express a range of emotions
build and maintain good relationships with others
feel engaged with the world around you
live and work productively
cope with the stresses of daily life
adapt and manage in times of change and uncertainty
Why does our mental wellbeing change?
There can be many reasons for changes in our mental wellbeing with regards to how you are feeling and how well you can cope with day-to-day life.
Some may be down to common life events such as:
loss or bereavement
issues at work
Others may be down to less obvious things such as inactivity or lack of sleep which are all have a negative impact on mental health. When we are feeling down and stressed, our energy levels are also low which means it is more difficult to achieve good mental wellbeing, so we need to address our energy levels to be able to help our mental health.
How do we achieve good mental health?
1. Increase energy levels

2. Rid energy blockages
When our ‘human energy’ levels are depleted we need to unblock the energy channels and boost circulation to allowing the body to re-energise. This creates a balance in mind, body and spirit. 3. Build positive relationships

4. Take time for yourself
In a busy world, it’s difficult to find time for ourselves. However, it is possible to grab just 10 minutes a day, switch off from auto-pilot and enjoy the things around you. This is being mindful.

5. Eat well
