Hay fever can be a blight to many people. Picture the scene, it’s a beautiful sunny day and you’re looking forwards to enjoying a walk in the park or a trip to the countryside, but you know your eyes will start to itch, your nose will run and the picture perfect day will start to fade.

In this blog, we look at what causes hay fever and how energy treatments can help to remove blockages that will ultimately help to provide hay fever relief.

What is hay fever?

Hay fever is a common allergic condition that affects up to one in five people at some point in their life.  Hay fever results in an allergic reaction to pollen.  Pollen is a fine powder released by plants as part of their reproductive cycle. It contains proteins that can irritate the nose, eyes, throat and sinuses.  There are different types of pollen that can cause allergies:

  1. tree pollen, released during spring
  2. grass pollen, released during the end of spring and beginning of summer
  3. weed pollen, released late autumn

Who's affected

Although hay fever can affect you at any age, it usually begins in childhood or during the teenage years. It's more common in boys than girls. In adults, men and women are equally affected.  You're more likely to develop hay fever if you have a family history of allergies, particularly asthma or eczema.  Many people find their symptoms improve as they get older and approximately 20% find their symptoms disappear completely.

Hay fever symptoms vary in severity and may be worse some years, depending on the weather conditions and pollen count.  The time of year your symptoms start will depend on the types of pollen you're allergic to.  Symptoms include:

  • Runny nose and nasal congestion
  • Watery, itchy, red eyes (allergic conjunctivitis)
  • Sneezing
  • Cough
  • Itchy nose, roof of mouth or throat
  • Fatigue

Whilst hay fever doesn't pose a serious threat to health, it can really have a negative impact on a person's quality of life. Even mild symptoms can interfere with sleep and daily activities at school or work.

Hay fever treatment

There's currently no cure for hay fever.  Treatment options for hay fever include antihistamines, which can help to prevent an allergic reaction from occurring and corticosteroids (steroids), which help to reduce inflammation and swelling.

How Jung Shim energy treatments can help

When we have a shortage of human energy, Qi, many things can effect out body. The more energy you have the more resilient you are.

Our energy treatments are very helpful for hay fever sufferers because they unblock energy blockages, calm the body and reduce the reaction the body has to pollen. The greater the flow of energy you have the less likely you are to be allergic to things.

Self-help tips

We can also recommend a few basic precautions to help prevent the symptoms of hay fever when you are outdoors, such as:

  • Wearing wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen getting in your eyes
  • Applying a small amount of Vaseline to the nasal openings to trap pollen grains

You can also shower and change clothes afterwards to remove the pollen on your body.  And, as an extreme measure, you may consider staying indoors when the pollen count is high (the pollen count is usually given as part of the weather forecast during the spring and summer months).
