Many of you will have been aware that World Mental Health Day was last week (October 10).   The day was dedicated to raising mental health awareness.  Every year one adult in four, along with one child in ten, will have a mental health issue. These conditions can profoundly affect literally millions of lives, affecting the capability of these individuals to make it through the day, to sustain relationships, and to maintain work.

Here at Jung Shim we hope that we can support your mental health everyday and our blog is dedicated to your mental wellbeing.  We hope that you find it helpful.

Mental and physical wellbeing

Many of us take great care of our bodies.  We exercise regularly and eat a balanced and ‘healthy’ diet.  If we feel unwell physically, we visit a pharmacy or doctor to get the medicine and expertise that we need to get better.   However, we also need to take such care of our emotional or mental wellbeing.   Like our bodies, our minds need to be fed, rested and nurtured in order for them to not get ‘sick’.

What is good mental wellbeing?

Quite simply, mental wellbeing describes your mental state.  It can be mistaken for happiness but where happiness can come and go in a moment, wellbeing is the state of being comfortable, healthy or happy.

Good mental wellbeing is when you are the following;

  • feel relatively confident in yourself and have positive self-esteem
  • feel and express a range of emotions
  • build and maintain good relationships with others
  • feel engaged with the world around you
  • live and work productively
  • cope with the stresses of daily life
  • adapt and manage in times of change and uncertainty

Why does our mental wellbeing change?

There can be many reasons for changes in our mental wellbeing with regards to how you are feeling and how well you can cope with day-to-day life.

Some may be down to common life events such as:

  • loss or bereavement
  • loneliness
  • relationship problems
  • issues at work
  • money worries

Others may be down to less obvious things such as inactivity or lack of sleep which are all have a negative impact on mental health. When we are feeling down and stressed, our energy levels are also low which means it is more difficult to achieve good mental wellbeing, so we need to address our energy levels to be able to help our mental health.

How do we achieve good mental health?

1. Increase energy levels - Many people who have taken up physical exercise report they feel more energised and more confident.  It doesn’t have to be strenuous, a walk in the park each day can help to us to feel engaged in the world again.

2. Rid energy blockages - When our ‘human energy’ levels are depleted we need to unblock the energy channels and boost circulation to allowing the body to re-energise. This creates a balance in mind, body and spirit. At Jung Shim, we offer Chunsoo Treatments to help relieve tiredness and fatigue, whilst detoxifying the body and having a calming effect on the mind.

 3. Build positive relationships - Friends are a source of happiness and spending time with friends keeps us in a good spirits. This emotional support helps us to put things in perspective and helps us keep our mental health in check.  Friends and personal relationships are so important and have such a positive effect on our mental wellbeing >>

 4. Take time for yourself - In a busy world, it’s difficult to find time for ourselves. However, it is possible to grab just 10 minutes a day, switch off from auto-pilot and enjoy the things around you.  This is being mindful.

For example, when your mobile pings a new message, you take time to pause and breathe instead of responding immediately without thinking. For these 10 minutes, become more aware of, and manage, your thoughts, feelings and surroundings.  Read our introduction to mindfulness >>

5. Eat well - It’s easy to reach for the biscuit tin or chocolate bar when we’re feeling low, but high sugar foods will not help, in fact they will hinder.  At Jung Shim, we have some fantastic healthy recipes to boost energy levels and still satisfy that sweet need >>

 How Jung Shim can help

Jung Shim means ‘beautiful mind’. Our chanting, meditation and movement classes, as well as our energy treatments, help us to release physical and emotional pain. This allows us to regain our beautiful mind and true nature. In doing so we learn to open our heart and allow people into our lives. When we let go of our pain we see the best in ourselves and in others, and so are more capable of finding connection with people. We then enjoy the company of others more and others enjoy our company too.  Come and try our classes and treatments to see how they can help you. Call 020 7462 8811 to find out more.
