ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) affects an estimated 250,000 people in the UK, and around 17 million people worldwide. Whilst the main cause is unknown, it often follows a viral infection, which is a sign that someone is ‘run down’, exhausted and low in ‘human’ energy, or Qi.

At Jung Shim, we frequently see how the pressures of modern day life affect our energy levels making it difficult to regain our equilibrium and feel truly re-energised. This blog looks at how energy levels affected Sue, who had been suffering with ME for over 10 years.

First though, let’s look at ME in more detail to understand the symptoms and how sufferers are typically affected.

Typical symptoms associated with ME

ME affects the nervous and immune systems and the main symptom is feeling extremely tired and generally unwell. People with ME may also experience sleep problems, joint pain, headaches, sore throats, flu like symptoms and irregular heart beat or heart palpitations.

The causes of ME

There is still along way to go to understanding what causes ME but there is evidence that certain infections can trigger the illness. Many are viruses but ME may be triggered in other ways. These include:

  • Viral infections, such as glandular fever
  • Bacterial infections, such as pneumonia
  • Problems with the immune system
  • A hormonal imbalance
  • Mental health problems such as stress and mental trauma
  • Your genes

At Jung Shim, we understand that our ‘human’ energy levels (Qi) can be affected by many things, such as our lifestyle, our physical environment, our emotional patterns and our general health. For example, if we are recovering from illness, our ‘human’ energy reserves are often low or depleted and this can sometimes lead to another illness in quick succession.

Treatment for ME

Treatment for ME aims to relieve the symptoms and the treatment will depend on how ME is affecting you. Treatment may include:

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy
  • A structured exercise programme called graded exercise therapy
  • Medication to control the pain, nausea and sleeping problems
  • Energy treatments and energy classes

People with ME can vary enormously in their experience of the illness, and also how long their symptoms last. Some make good progress and may recover, while others can remain ill for a number of years and may not get better. Some people find that they don’t go back completely to the way they felt before they became ill, but they do recover sufficiently to lead happy and fulfilling lives. This is similar to many other chronic illnesses.

Energy Treatments and Energy Classes – Sue’s story

Here, we focus on Sue, who has been suffering with ME for over ten years and came to see Jung Shim. Here is her story and how Jung Shim helped transform her life and helped her live with this illness.

“I trained as a classical musician and before my illness I played in the Halle Orchestra. I loved music and playing the viola and it was the only thing I ever really wanted to do. The orchestra had a busy schedule with lots of travelling at home and some foreign tours.

After I left Music College, I had Glandular Fever and although I recovered, with hindsight my health wasn’t as good as it had been before. I started to have IBS symptoms and then muscular problems. I carried on playing through muscular pain, taking painkillers and having osteopathy and using the Alexander Technique which kept me going. Finally, I had a virus from which I couldn’t seem to recover. I was diagnosed with Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome and later M.E or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I was unable to carry on working.

I had my first Energy Treatment at a Mind Body Spirit show in Manchester in 2006. I got talking to the practitioner and she had ME. She explained how our own ‘human’ energy levels can affect our general health and our ability to fully recover from virus infections etc which leads us susceptible to other illnesses. She introduced me to energy treatments, a treatment that originated in South East Asia and combines acupressure with breathing techniques. She said it had worked for her, so I decided to give it a go.

I had been suffering from M.E (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) for over 10 years. I had tried all sorts of approaches in my search to recover my health both conventional and complementary. My doctor was sympathetic but didn’t know what to suggest.

I tried hypnotherapy, reflexology, aromatherapy and qigong to mention a few.  Most things helped but only to a certain extent and I kept running up against what felt like a brick wall of fatigue and ill health. I had lost hope in making a full recovery and had trouble in doing any activity regularly. I felt a lot older than my 40 years.

“I had lost hope in making a full recovery”

The energy treatments only take 15 minutes and you stay fully clothed while they press energy points on your stomach, arms, back, legs and shoulders. It’s designed to detox and re-energise. My first energy treatment felt quite painful and I was surprised at the knots I had in my stomach but I remember the practitioner telling me that she could help me. Later that day my back and shoulders which normally felt very tight and tense felt relaxed and light and I had a sense of wellbeing and “normality”.

“Four years later I was travelling to Korea to become a practitioner”

I now have my health back and have more energy than I had before I was ill. I never could have believed that I could be so healthy and happy.
